As of March 2024, children in Japan receive four doses of the DPT-IPV vaccine (Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Polio) as part of the routine immunization schedule, typically completed by around 18 months of age. However, studies have shown that immunity from these early vaccinations gradually wanes, and children may become susceptible to illnesses such as pertussis before entering elementary school.
In response, the Japan Pediatric Society began recommending a fifth booster dose of the DPT (Triphibic®) and IPV (Imovax®) vaccines for children prior to school entry, starting in August 2018
This booster is considered an optional vaccination, as the combined DPT-IPV vaccine is currently approved only for the initial four-dose schedule.About the Fifth Dose:
- The combination of DPT and IPV vaccines is equivalent in protection to the four-component DPT-IPV vaccine.
- However, due to regulatory limitations, the fifth dose must be administered as separate DPT and IPV vaccines under optional vaccination.
また、 For Ages 11–12: Children may also receive the DPT vaccine as an alternative to the routine DT (Diphtheria, Tetanus) vaccine. In some municipalities, public funding may cover this substitution.
If you wish to receive the optional DTP and polio vaccines, please select “Other Vaccines” in the online calendar and write the vaccine names in the remarks column.
